(June 2, 2023, St. John’s) – Craig Pardy, PC Opposition Shadow Minister for Fisheries and MHA for Bonavista, is raising concerns about Quin-Sea/Royal Greenland refusing to buy crab from the under 40 foot fleet.
Pardy was responding to media reports and calls to the official opposition from harvesters around the province who want to go fishing.
“This is very confusing. Fisherman, who live side by side, and tie up to the same wharf, are being told different things about their ability to go fishing. Some companies are buying from harvesters, regardless of boat size or quota, to ensure fair access,” said Pardy.
“Quin-Sea/Royal Greenland are reportedly not and it is time the Minister of Fisheries find out why?”
Pardy noted the 2023 Crab Fishery lost seven weeks due to a price standoff and the Liberal Government’s refusal to get involved in discussions. Now, many small boat harvesters, whose employment insurance has run out, are anxious to go fishing but are being told no.
“Landings are very good and the price has now increased. After almost two months of inaction, it is time for the Minister to get involved and ensure fair treatment of all harvesters in the province,” said Pardy.
Pardy indicated many harvesters are worried about an abrupt end to the season, noting companies could stop buying at any time. Others cited bad weather and soft shell which could jeopardize their ability to land their quota.
“Harvesters have no income, yet are watching their friends and neighbors go fishing,” said Pardy.
“It is simply not right for companies to pick and choose while harvester livelihoods hangs in the balance.”
