(June 9, 2023, St. John’s) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, says anxieties about debt and the cost of living felt by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians show more is needed to help people through the cost of living crisis.

“The Liberal Government talks about action on cost of living, but the evidence is clear: Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living. The recently Liberal budget contained zero new measures to help those who are struggling under increasing cost of living pressures,” said Brazil.

A recent poll from Angus Reid shows 37% of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are struggling financially. 28% say they are uncomfortable.

“Half price car registration fees aren’t enough to help the people of our province who are struggling to make ends meet. When over half the province reports difficulties with their finances, they expect action from their government to help,” said Brazil.

Chris Tibbs, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Housing and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor, says that the ability to raise a family, own a home or just be heathy is getting further and further out of reach for people in this province.

“The Poverty Reduction Strategy was last updated in 2014. The Liberal Government only started studying the issue last year. It’s too little, too late from this government to help those in vulnerable situations as the cost of living crisis continues,” said Tibbs.

“The Liberal Government must outline the next steps toward helping the people of our province manage through a cost of living crisis that continues to affect the daily lives of the people of our province. We need a government that takes these issues seriously.”
