(June 14, 2023, St. John’s) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, says he’s glad to see Premier Andrew Furey change his tone after his government again and again supported the Liberal Carbon Tax.
“Time and time again this Premier and his government have vocally supported the Carbon Tax, despite the people of our province speaking about the impact higher heating costs will have. Did the Premier have a crisis of conscience or a crisis of polling numbers?” said Brazil.
“With two weeks until the Carbon Tax is applied to home heating fuel, now the second carbon tax takes aim at fuels like gasoline and diesel. The Liberals want you to believe they’re against this tax – while they’ve made no meaningful effort to block it.”
The Liberals record on supporting the carbon tax is clear:
Minister Abbott said: “the carbon tax is the right policy instrument and we need to stick with it, come high or low.” Minister Davis said: “I have no issue with supporting carbon tax and I'm very supportive of what we're doing with respect to the carbon tax.”
“If the Premier and his government had opposed these taxes from the beginning, we might be in a better position to block them. The Premier has had years Instead, the Premier played along with his Liberal cousins and is now trying to save face here at home,” said Brazil.
“I’m calling on the Premier: the people of Newfoundland and Labrador could never afford these tax increases on your watch. We must take every effort to block these increases and prevent the people of our province from having to choose between food and heat.”
