Fisheries Minister Makes Mockery of Openness On Quin-Sea Licence Transfer Issue

Kevin Parsons, Fisheries Critic for the Official Opposition, said, “The Ball government’s approval of the Quin-Sea fish processing license transfer to foreign-owned Royal Greenland without any prior answers from the provincial Minister demonstrates the Liberal administration is not truly committed to the principles of openness, transparency and accountability.”

Parsons questioned Minister Crocker about the issue in the House of Assembly less than 24 hours before the transfer approval announcement was made, but the Minister – who has been tight-lipped on the application since December – remained tight-lipped in the House.

“We have been asking for details for months, and also requested public consultation before a decision was made. We asked fair questions in the House on March 10 about whether the province had received the report of the Fish Processing Licensing Board with a recommendation on the licence transfer. For months, we’ve been asking whether the transfer compromises Newfoundland and Labrador’s interests. Can the Minister ensure that the inshore fishery quota will be protected from ownership by the non-Canadian company? The provincial Minister has been absent and silent on the issue, despite its importance to our people,” said Parsons.

“His decision to announce the approval of this application on Friday, just hours after saying nothing in the House before it adjourned for the long weekend, proves he is afraid of the spotlight of accountability,” said Parsons.

"It's time for the province’s Fisheries Minister to stop ducking his obligation to be accountable to the people of this province about fisheries issues that are vital to thousands of families and communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Parsons.
