(June 16, 2023, St. John’s) – Paul Dinn, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Health and Community Services and MHA for Topsail-Paradise, says failed efforts to introduce an in-vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic in Newfoundland and Labrador shows a lack of commitment from the Liberal Government.
“The Premier made a promise, but a rushed request for proposals shows the promise was more lip service than a serious commitment. Now, they’re back to the drawing board in an attempt to save face. All the while, prospective parents are still facing lengthy waits, expensive travel, and not enough support from the Liberal Government,” said Dinn.
“Travelling three-quarters of the way across the country to Calgary to avail of these services is a huge burden for those who wish to start their family. A subsidy is one thing, but it is no replacement for providing accessible IVF treatment here at home.”
Dinn says the Premier’s delay means more undue hardship prospective parents.
“Those who choose to start a family through IVF services deserve the same support and recognition as anyone else. Forcing hardship and false promises on these prospective families is just not right,” said Dinn.
“It’s time for the Premier to take his own promise seriously and make IVF services accessible in Newfoundland and Labrador.
