(June 28, 2023, St. John’s) – PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Transportation and Infrastructure and MHA for Ferryland, Loyola O’Driscoll, is raising concerns about the condition of healthcare facilities in the province and the lack of transparency from the Liberal Government on the issue.

According to an Access to Information request filed by the Telegram and reported yesterday, there are several healthcare facilities in the province that are in worse condition than St. Clare’s Hospital.

O’Driscoll says, “This is not to say that St. Clare’s Hospital is not worthy of replacement. However, the Liberal government indicated that the condition of the hospital was the poorest among all hospitals in Newfoundland and Labrador, excluding the soon-to-be-replaced Western Memorial and Waterford. We now know that this simply isn’t true.”

The Telegram has reported that hospitals in both Port aux Basques and Burin are in worse condition than St. Clare’s Hospital. The same Access to Information request also shows that many long-term care homes have extremely poor conditions, even worse than the hospitals they highlighted.

“Six long-term care homes have even lower ratings. Providing seniors with the dignity and respect they deserve includes ensuring that the buildings in which they live are not falling apart. The public has yet to see feasibility studies for these facilities from the Liberal government, and it is high time for them to get their act together."
