(June 29, 2023, St. John’s) – David Brazil, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, extends heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador to the family of the Hon. William W. Marshall.
Brazil states, "It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of the Honorable William W. Marshall, whose contributions to our province cannot be overstated."
First elected in 1970, the Honourable William (Bill) W. Marshall was one of the most vocal and effective critics of the Smallwood administration. His political advocacy continued into the 1980s, where he played a crucial role in negotiating the Atlantic Accord.
In 1986, Marshall was appointed to the Appeals division of the Supreme Court in the province, serving as a distinguished and respected jurist until 2003.
Reflecting on Marshall's remarkable achievements, Brazil says, "I am proud to have been in the same room as Bill, Mulroney, Crosbie, Peckford, and Carney during the signing of the historic Atlantic Accord. No other agreement has been as important to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador since Confederation with Canada."
"When we remember those who have made significant contributions to Newfoundland and Labrador, we often use the metaphor 'standing on the shoulders of giants.' In Bill's case, his contributions were so significant that words fail me when I reflect upon their true importance," adds Brazil.
