(July 31, 2023, St. John’s) – David Brazil, PC Official Opposition Leader, and Paul Dinn, PC Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Health and Community Services, says the scourge of addiction needs a multi-faceted approach to protect our population and prevent drug overdose deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“My deepest condolences extend to the Olivero family and all those who have suffered immense loss due to opioid overdoses in our province. Increasing enforcement and cracking down on the flow of illicit drugs into our province are just pieces of the larger puzzle in what is a complex, multi-faceted issue like drug addiction in our province,” said Brazil.
“The RNC and RCMP must put an even greater focus on seeking out the root of the illicit drug supply into Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition to supporting enforcement, we must do more to support those living with addiction in our province. We must ensure when people ask for help for their addictions issue, the help is waiting for them.”
Dinn says access to long-term supports for mental health and addictions must be a priority for our government.
“Far too often we hear stories of people being denied care, or being placed on waitlists for psychiatrists or psychologists that are years long. Care delayed is care denied. An addiction doesn’t appear overnight and there is no quick and simple solution,” said Dinn.
“Long-term access to mental healthcare and support for those seeking treatment for their addictions must be central to government’s approach in pushing back against the opioid crisis in our country and here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Help has to be there when someone asks for it.”
