Broken crown lands system needs action now: Forsey

(December 5, 2023, St. John’s): Pleaman Forsey, PC Shadow Minister for Forestry, and MHA for the District of Exploits, is again expressing his disappointment that, despite the passage of another session in the House of Assembly, the Liberals have decided to ignore the critical issues that remain present throughout the broken crown lands system in our province.

Forsey said, “Yet again, another House session has passed and we’ve seen no legislation from the Liberals to address the key issues in crown lands. The system is broken and the Liberals have gone into hiding. Reports continue to collect dust on shelves while the Liberals take innocent seniors to court over properties they’ve lived on for decades. What does that tell you about their priorities?”

Forsey introduced a Private Members Bill in the House of Assembly this past spring, putting forward meaningful solutions including amending the Lands Act to ensure fair reconciliation of existing claims for people seeking title to the land they have occupied in good faith for generations.

“It’s come to a point where the Liberals are in denial of common sense solutions designed to push back barriers within the battered crown lands system. Day in, day out, people in communities all across our province are looking for answers and the Liberals have once again missed the mark and have failed to lead,” noted Forsey.

“After almost a decade of empty Liberal promises and false hope, people deserve action. A PC government under Tony Wakeham’s leadership will ensure that we put people before politics by removing the red tape that is blocking this important legislation from going through once and for all.”
