(December 7, 2023, St. John’s):Tony Wakeham, PC Official Opposition Leader and MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, today expressed concern over proposed new Liberal emissions cap on our province’s oil and gas sector.

Wakeham was responding to an announcement today in Ottawa from the Trudeau Liberals that will impose a framework to cap pollution from the oil and gas sector. While recognizing climate change is real, Wakeham has questions on how this will influence the cost of living crisis.

“The last thing we need in Newfoundland and Labrador is another increase in the costs of goods and services. We already have the Liberal Carbon Tax and the Liberal Clean Fuel Standards which have increased the costs of living - especially food. We have a homelessness crisis, record foodbank use among seniors and children and working class families are living cheque to cheque. Is this a third Carbon Tax?”

In addition to Wakeham, Lloyd Parrott, PC Shadow Minister for Industry, Energy and Technology, also believes that today’s announcement has serious implications on future production in our offshore oil and gas sector.

“Furey and Trudeau have turned their backs on not only the men and women who depend on the offshore as a way of life but the entire industry. We should be taking advantage of our primary resources but instead the Fury-Trudeau Liberals are looking for a way to shut it down at the expense of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.” said Parrott

“The last thing we need in this province is another increase in the costs of goods and services. The Furey-Trudeau Liberals have already quadrupled the carbon tax on our gas and groceries. They are truly out-of-touch with the realities facing the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. With people already at their breaking point living cheque to cheque, you have to wonder, is the third carbon tax coming?” asked Wakeham.
