Budget Tool Not Ready

When questioned about the Budget in the House of Assembly on Thursday, Finance Minister Cathy Bennett chastised the Opposition for spreading misinformation and said: “We’re going to post online a tool so Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who are in the low income – and our constituency assistants can provide the facts to low-income people.”

Keith Hutchings, Finance Critic for the Official Opposition, was surprised to learn that, moments later when questioned by the media, government officials said no such tool exists today. The Minister of Finance is unable to answer questions in the House of Assembly, and unable to provide individuals with a resource to tell them how much more they will be paying in taxes based on their particular circumstances.

Hutchings said, “No wonder people are confused about the impact of this Budget when the Premier and the Finance Minister don’t have answers about the impacts on people.

“It is the Minister of Finance and the Premier who are fueling the confusion and worry that is gripping people throughout the province today as families try desperately to calculate the impact of this Liberal budget on them and their loved ones.

"How much more will families have to pay, and when will they have to pay it? Where will they need to cut back in order to make ends meet? And how can people plan when they know there’s another axe about to come down in the fall?

"Is it any wonder people are outraged? The Liberals have no plan and no answers. They are simply not ready, and making it up as they go along. The uncertainty is distressing families, depressing consumer spending and destroying our economy. Businesses big and small are negatively impacted by this Budget. This reckless approach has to end.”
