Opposition Lobbies Successfully to Honour Commitment to Adult Dental Work

Paul Davis, Official Opposition Leader and Health Critic, was informed in Budget Estimates on May 11 that the government will now complete the treatments it commenced under the adult dental program.

Davis said the government’s Budget 2016 changes to the adult dental program created enormous distress for patients who had started their treatment under the plans the PC government put in place.

Patients were worried that they would not be able to complete their dental treatment. The Minister of Health and Community Services stated during the Budget Estimates on May 11 that patients who started their treatment under the adult dental program prior to April 2016 will be able to complete their treatment. Some are awaiting dentures after having their teeth removed.

Davis is discouraged that the Budget cuts to the adult dental program will leave some NLPDP patients with limited or no options for dental care, but it would have been unconscionable if patients were to have been robbed of care partway through their treatment.
