Premier Refusing to Answer Questions or Speak With Media

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, said today that Premier Dwight Ball’s refusal to answer a single question in Question Period and declining to meet with reporters after the session is another failure by the Premier.

“Instead of being accountable for his actions and leading government, the Premier is hiding,” said Davis.

The Opposition raised questions today about the Premier’s repeated commitment to release a Justice Department report on the provision of severance to the former CEO of Nalcor Energy. The Premier refused to answer.

The Opposition raised questions about whether the Premier or his staff were involved in the decision to use public money to selectively remove protest signs picturing the Premier from utility poles on Sunday night. The Premier refused to answer.

The Premier has also refused media requests for a scrum following Question Period both yesterday and today.

Davis said, “The Liberals promised accountability, openness and respect for the House of Assembly. But now that the heat is on, the Premier is hiding from the people. Perhaps his advisors believe he has become a public relations liability. But that is no excuse for refusing to answer pressing questions about the way he is running the government and the choices he is forcing people to bear. People deserve answers about what the Premier is doing, and it’s his job to provide them.”
