Is Ball Government Committed to Delivering on Four Health and Wellness Projects Financed by Vale’s $30 Million Contribution in 2015?

Keith Hutchings, Natural Resources Critic for the Official Opposition, wants to know if the Ball government remains committed to proceeding with four community development initiatives financed by Vale in 2015 with a total value of $30 million.

Through amendments the Progressive Conservative government was able to make to the Voisey's Bay Development Agreement in 2015, Vale provided $30 million which the province committed to four community initiatives:

• $12 million for supportive housing and health supports for vulnerable populations;

• $11 million for a new wellness centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay;

• $4.5 million for a new pool in Placentia; and

• $2.5 million for a cardiovascular hybrid operating room at the Health Sciences Centre.

Hutchings said the mayors of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Placentia welcomed the announcements for their communities in 2015, saying they would significantly enhance the recreation and wellness benefits for area residents; the housing and health supports would assist people province-wide who are living with mental health and addictions challenges; and the cardiovascular hybrid operating room would provide state-of-the-art care for patients at the province’s major tertiary care facility by combining traditional diagnostic functions of a cardiac catheter lab with the surgical functions of an operating room for improved and less invasive surgical care.

“These initiatives were greeted enthusiastically because they represent major advances in care for people throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, plus major wellness investments in regions were Vale is operating,” said Hutchings.

“These initiatives are supported by a $30 million contribution from Vale, negotiated with the former Progressive Conservative government. Is the Ball government committed to ensuring these projects move forward so people can see the benefits, or has the Ball government softened its support and is it planning on not supporting the health and wellness of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians?”
