Official Opposition Offers Condolences on Passing of Former PC MHA Hazel Newhook

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, today expressed condolences to the family and friends of former PC MHA Hazel Newhook.

Ms. Newhook was a trailblazer in her community, business and political efforts. She was one of the first women in the province to hold office as the Mayor of Gander in 1975, and represented the district of Gander in provincial politics from 1979 to 1985. Ms. Newhook became one of the first women to be appointed to cabinet as the Minister of Municipal Affairs under Premier Brian Peckford.

“Hazel Newhook had a profound impact on the province, and led the way for many women to enter politics. She was a trailblazer and will be fondly remembered and respected for the many contributions she made to Newfoundland and Labrador. To have been bestowed the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador was a true testament to Ms. Newhook’s character and long-lasting contributions to our province. We take pause to remember Ms. Newhook’s loved ones in our thoughts and prayers and join all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in celebrating her legacy,” said Davis.
