Liberals Failing in their Promotion of Mistaken Point: Hutchings

St. John’s, NL (June 7, 2018) – Keith Hutchings, MHA for Ferryland, is today calling on the Liberal government to explain their failure to support the Mistaken Point UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“Despite Mistaken Point being granted the rare designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, this Liberal government continues a lackluster approach in ensuring that staffing, infrastructure and administrative support are put in place to welcome the world. In actual fact, many question if they even understand the consequences of failing to provide the support and promotion that this world-class tourism destination deserves,” said Hutchings

Hutchings points to the back cover of the 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador’s Traveler’s Guide as an example of their failure to promote the site. A full page ad, displayed on the back cover, calls on the reader to “Discover a trio of UNESCO World Heritage Sites” – referring to the three federally operated sites and excluding Mistaken Point.

“And now we see that even the Government’s own recently-published 2018 Traveler’s Guide chose to only focus on the three federally-operated UNESCO sites rather than our own provincially-operated Mistaken Point. All four sites contribute significantly to our tourism industry, and are equally deserving of support and celebration. I ask the government to explain why it refuses to promote Mistaken Point?”

While Mistaken Point offers tremendous economic opportunities for the Southern Avalon, this omission again highlights a trend of neglect of the site, and all it has to offer. This includes the Liberals’ failure to provide needed investment and new administrative support as outlined in the management plan for UNESCO status, delays in hiring at the site, and delays in execution of the management plan to ensure that the site will meet mandatory UNESCO operational requirements.

“Although thousands of people from around the world continue to visit the Mistaken Point site annually, the Liberals have consistently dismissed calls for better supports for the site. This comes at the same time that volunteers with the Mistaken Point Cape Race Heritage – the not-for-profit community organization that operates the Interpretation Centre in Portugal Cove South which acts as the gateway for tourists visiting the site – are fearful that without unconditional support, the center may not be able to operate,” added Hutchings

“Unlike the governing Liberals, our Progressive Conservative Official Opposition will continue to listen and work with residents of the region, including local volunteer groups, to support this important world tourist and ecological site, and its unique fossils. This includes continuing to work tirelessly to ensure this huge economic opportunity for the Southern Avalon is not squandered by a Liberal government who cannot see their way forward.”
