Liberals Force School Busing Changes for September Without Consulting or Considering Parents

David Brazil, Education Critic for the Official Opposition, said, “The province’s Liberals have shown no consideration for parents affected by school bus schedule changes that the Liberals’ cost-cutting measures have caused.

“With the start of the school year just weeks away, the Liberals have not consulted with parents or shown any interest in finding out what impacts those changes will have on families or how those impacts might be addressed. The Liberals caused this upheaval but are taking no responsibility for listening to parents or helping families cope with the fallout of their choices.

“Proposed changes to afternoon departure times threaten after-school programs that relied on high school students to provide mentoring and supervision to younger students. With high school students now facing later departures from school each afternoon, many parents of younger children may be left without an affordable after-school option.

“The minister has had months to engage with people affected by bus schedule changes. Had he shown any real interest in consulting with parents, he could have given them an opportunity to make the case for revisions early enough to bring them about. Instead, the minister has squandered that time and left parents in the lurch.

“Instead of showing leadership, the Education Minister has chosen to take a hands-off approach and let others take the blame for the Liberals’ choices. That’s just not good enough. Like library closures, this is just one more example of the Liberals making decisions without properly planning, listening to people or weighing the consequences.”
