Still No Economic Plan in Sight

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, said, “The province’s Liberals have still not produced an economic plan for Newfoundland and Labrador, a year after promising one would be ready.

“In the absence of a plan for growth, the Liberals’ 2016 Budget buried people in taxes that have smothered the prospects for new growth. At a time when low oil and iron ore prices were hurting key parts of our economy, the Liberals’ approach made matters worse instead of better.

“Families dealing with high taxes and apprehension about cuts to come are restraining their spending, and that is putting the brakes on areas of the economy that could be helping us grow.

“While people are struggling, most ministers and MHAs have gone into hiding, providing no leadership or answers to people who are wondering how they plan to get the province back to growth. The Minister of Business, instead of working with businesses here at home to stimulate growth, is traveling the globe and bringing nothing home to turn our economy around. The Liberals have not listened to local business leaders who are saying the barrage of tax increases made us less competitive than we have been in years. If the Liberals were listening to businesses, they would be doing things differently to drive growth and attract new opportunities.

“Where is the LEAP Plan, the economic diversification plan that Premier Ball, Minister Bennett, Minister Coady and their 'team of leaders' had promised? Confidence has taken a severe beating, and the responsibility falls on the Liberals’ shoulders for failing to deliver the economic plan that they promised and that they have an obligation to deliver.

“Because they clearly don’t know what they’re doing or where they’re leading, the Liberals have not just missed opportunities, but crushed them. Ironically, their actions are hurting the very revenue streams that they are relying on to fuel their budget, because people can only be taxed so much before there is no more left to give. But instead of listening, the Liberals have defended their tax hikes, saying taxes are not really all that high. No wonder Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are so dissatisfied with the Liberal government.”
