Official Opposition Congratulates Katarina Roxon on Gold Medal in Paralympics

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, said, "Congratulations to Newfoundland and Labrador's Katarina Roxon on winning the gold medal in the 100-metre breaststroke at the Paralympic Games in Rio.”

"Not only did she set a personal best to win the qualifying heat in 1:21:27, but she ‎swam even faster in the final to win the race in 1:19:44 and a gold medal for Canada, her first Paralympics gold," said Davis.

"In claiming the gold medal, Katarina generously thanked all those in Newfoundland and Labrador who have helped her in her quest for a gold medal at the world's ‎most elite athletic competition. We would all like to commend Katarina's dad, Leonard, her coach since 2004. I am sure there are no words to describe the pride and joy he and Katarina's entire family are feeling today. It is a feeling that is shared throughout our province and the entire country. Indeed, the whole world has taken notice as Katarina has claimed a place in the Paralympic record books."

‎"Katarina has more races to go, and Newfoundland and Labrador will be loudest among the millions of Canadians who are cheering her on," said Davis.

"We could not be more proud of what Katarina has achieved, and we celebrate her for the years of hard work and determination that propelled her to reach her goal. We recognize not just the incredible talent but the incredible perseverance required to achieve a goal of this magnitude. Katarina is the perfect role model for young people across our province and around the world."

"We look forward to welcoming Katarina home with all the pomp and ceremony that she rightly deserves," he said.
