MHA Tours Storm-Damaged District‎, Impresses Upon Government Urgency and Level of Assistance Required

Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune, toured storm-damaged areas of her district on Wednesday with Premier Dwight Ball and Transportation Minister Allan Hawkins. Seeing the devastating impact of the storm firsthand and speaking with residents and responders provided MHA Perry the opportunity to impress upon government the urgency and level of assistance required to meet people’s needs.

"The torrential rain storm and flooding that Hurricane Matthew brought ‎into our communities has taken a terrible toll on many families and seriously damaged important local infrastructure. People and communities need assistance, and I was pleased to be able to make the case directly to the Premier as we toured some of storm-damaged areas of my district on Wednesday," said Perry.

"Infrastructure damage that has affected emergency services, school access‎, public mobility and the local economy is a challenge that must be addressed as an urgent priority."

"I will spare no effort, as the district's MHA, to ensure‎ that the needs of families and communities are identified, brought to the attention of the right officials and effectively addressed. The Premier assured me that the government is prepared to act to address our needs. I would like to reassure residents that I will continue to work very hard with officials to help mobilize resources as we work towards full recovery from the devastating impact of the storm. I highly commend and thank our local officials, first responders, service crews, volunteers and residents for their tireless efforts and care for their neighbors. We have no doubt will get through this together - please stay safe and contact my office at any time,” said Perry.

Perry said the government has triggered a process that allows people to apply for assistance if they have suffered storm damage and her office has applications and information available. MHA Perry can be reached by telephone at 709-538-6076 or 1-888-538-3112 or by email at traceyperry@gov.nl.ca
