PM Trudeau Follows Through on Commitment to Davis for Marine Rescue Centre

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, is applauding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for following through on a commitment that, as Premier, Davis secured from Trudeau in 2015.

Davis says, “Our efforts as a government in the fall of 2015 to secure a commitment from the Trudeau government to restore the marine rescue centre have led to this announcement. We will be vigilant in ensuring the improvements do indeed result in enhanced search and rescue capacity and permanent improvements in response times. We are also continuing to call for a comprehensive review of marine safety that will lead to concrete recommendations to improve the lives of the many thousands of people who work and travel on our waters each year.”

“We also welcome the positive news about the lifeboat stations in Twillingate and Bay de Verde and the refurbished station in St. Anthony.”

As Premier on September 25, 2015, Davis wrote to the federal party leaders, including Liberal leader Trudeau, seeking commitments on issues of importance to Newfoundland and Labrador, including the marine rescue centre as well as the fisheries investment fund, national defence investments, a greater role in fisheries management, repeal of the LIFO policy, the cleanup of contaminated sites, lower Marine Atlantic rates, greater access to workers from other countries and so forth.

Davis wrote: “The federal government has a clear responsibility to protect Canadians and provide access to a reliable and responsive air and marine search and rescue system. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be a strong advocate for improved marine safety in the province and enhanced SAR capacity and response times. What is your plan to permanently improve SAR response times and enhance SAR capacity in Newfoundland and Labrador? Will you commit to undertaking a comprehensive review of marine safety?”

Liberal leader Trudeau responded on October 15, 2015, stating: “One of the most important responsibilities of any government is ensuring and maintaining the security of its citizens. Closing down the marine rescue centre — and making overall cuts to search and rescue — was one of the many short-sighted mistakes of this government during the Harper decade. A Trudeau-led government will re-open the maritime rescue sub-centre, and re-invest in marine safety and search and rescue resources.”

On October 27, 2015 after Trudeau was elected Prime Minister, Davis again wrote to him, listing the issues that are “of paramount importance to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador”, including “Marine Rescue Substation: The immediate reinstatement of this important marine safety infrastructure in the province.”
