Liberals Finally Reach One of their Budget 2016 Economic Targets: 5,700 Jobs Lost in 12 Months

Keith Hutchings, Finance Critic for the Official Opposition, said, "The Ball Liberals have finally reached one of their 2016 budget predictions - but unfortunately for the province, their prediction of 30,000 job losses throughout Newfoundland and Labrador is well underway."

The latest data from Statistics Canada show a drop of 5,700 jobs in the province between December 2015 to December 2016, bucking the national trend of job growth. Nation-wide, it was the best year for job growth since 2012. Not so in Newfoundland and Labrador, which suffered a 2.5 per cent employment decline in one year, the largest drop in the country.

Hutchings said, "In the 2016 Budget and again in the fall fiscal update, the Ball Liberals projected that Newfoundland and Labrador, under their governance, would suffer the loss of some 30,000 jobs by 2020, with thousands of those losses occurring by 2017. The Liberals' bleak predictions have proven to be accurate - and it's no surprise. They have proven in 14 months that they have absolutely no economic plan to create the conditions for job growth. In fact, their business and personal tax hikes and uncertainty of economic planning have depressed consumer spending as we predicted, depressed employer hiring and made local enterprises less competitive. No wonder the province's economy is in freefall."

"The truly sad aspect of this news is that these job losses represent the livelihoods of thousands of individuals and families across our province. People are looking to the government to create the conditions for growth in our economy, but the Ball Liberals are instead letting people and our economy down," said Hutchings.
