‘Way Forward’ Only Looks Backward: Throne Speech a Missed Opportunity, Offers No Plan for Growth and No Focus on People

Paul Davis, Leader of the Official Opposition, says, “The Ball government’s latest Throne Speech – two years into their term – is a missed opportunity that spends most of its time looking backward instead of laying the foundation for growth with a solid economic plan that includes tax relief for overtaxed Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”

“There is virtually nothing new in this year’s Throne Speech, and certainly nothing to give people confidence that the government has a plan to lead. No vision – no plan – no hope – no focus on people. They spend pages taking credit for growth achieved by the former administration’s energy and tourism strategies, but offer no strategies of their own,” said Davis.

“The speech also overlooks many issues that matter to people. It ignores the fish processing sector and the Fisheries Investment Fund they failed to deliver, and makes almost no reference to rural Newfoundland and Labrador. It mentions Labrador only as an afterthought while ignoring its enormous growth potential. It fails to include the generic royalty regime that our offshore sector has been promised for two years to give the industry certainty. It makes no reference to Mistaken Point, which just received prestigious UNESCO status and needs guidance to capitalize on that. It provides no specifics on classroom inclusion, a serious issue for teachers, parents and students.”

Davis said “The speech is full of vague words like ‘advance,’ ‘focus,’ and ‘outline,’ but short on details. Some of the phrases are ominous, like ‘we will do better with less’ – a phrase that will only worsen the uncertainty that has crushed our economy by discouraging consumers from spending.”

“The Ball Liberals still don’t get it, and that is why people of the province are very dissatisfied with the government’s performance. Nothing in this speech demonstrates that the Liberals have learned their lesson. They continue to flounder without a plan. People are demanding better. Newfoundland and Labrador deserves better,” said Davis.
