$11,000 a Day for Subsidized Free-Ski Weekend at Marble Mountain While Tax Burdens on People Remain in Place

Barry Petten, Official Opposition Member for Conception Bay South, is questioning the Ball government’s priorities when they are paying $11,000 a day to re-open the Marble Mountain ski hill at a loss on a free-to-use basis on Easter weekend while at the same time continuing with hundreds of increased taxes and fees on the people of the province.

“Families are enduring exorbitant taxes while students and patients are enduring education and health care funding shortfalls at the same time that the government is dipping into the public treasury to subsidize a free-ski weekend at Marble Mountain. When they say 'every dollar counts,' boast to be 'strong fiscal managers,' and have recognized they continue to reach into the pockets of people - they choose to put a heavily subsidized free-ski weekend ahead of the real needs of the people. The Ball Liberals have their priorities upside-down,” said Petten.

In Question Period in the House of Assembly on April 10, Petten asked: “At a time when Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are struggling to get by under the weight of the Liberal government’s excessive taxes, does the minister think that it is reasonable to reopen Marble Mountain and offer a three-day free-for-all on the backs of the taxpayer? With all the Liberal tax and fee increases, people are struggling, and you think it’s a priority to give away free tickets and ski rentals?”

Petten said, “The government is grasping at straws to justify the appalling misappropriation of limited public funds.”

Petten said ironically, the Member who answered the question on behalf of the government, the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, is also the Member for Terra Nova district, the site of the White Hills Ski Resort, which is not being afforded a similar luxury.
