Majority Oppose Carbon Tax; Where's the Plan?

Barry Petten, Environment Critic for the Official Opposition, said, "With a new Angus Reid poll showing the majority of Canadians - and an even larger majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians - oppose the carbon tax, the government owes people answers about the course it's on."

The Angus Reid poll in June showed that national support for the carbon tax has dropped to just 44 per cent, while 62 per cent of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians oppose it.

"When close to two-thirds of the population opposes a major government policy, the government has clearly done a poor job of ‎listening to people and informing people about its plans," said Petten.

"The Ball Liberals - like the Trudeau Liberals - have left people with more questions than answers about what the pending carbon tax will mean for families, employers and our economy. Will it ‎mean more money coming out of people's pockets? Will it mean employers laying people off or shutting down? Will it further harm our province's fragile, overtaxed economy? We don't know, because the Liberals won't let people know what they are planning."

"The House passed made-in-Newfoundland-and-Labrador legislation intended to protect local employers and jobs under any new carbon tax initiative, but we have no idea whether that will be enough to satisfy the Trudeau ‎imperative. When will the Liberals get around to informing people about their plans?"

"We just saw a new offshore agreement signed without being told how the carbon tax ‎factors into it. Will the carbon tax cost us revenues and jobs? Why is the government leaving people in the dark on a policy that could seriously impact our economy at a vulnerable time?"

Petten said, "The people of our province are already reeling from the impact of more than 300 tax and fee increases imposed by the Liberals, including gas and insurance taxes that are really hurting families. Yet another tax burden is the last thing our people need. "
