Changes Needed to the Building Accessibility Act

Tracey Perry, Status of Persons with Disabilities Critic for the Official Opposition, is calling on Minister Trimper and Minister Gambin Walsh to give an update on changes to the Building Accessibility Act and the corresponding regulations.

“Several of my caucus colleagues and I have met with members of the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities – Newfoundland and Labrador (COD-NL). We commend them on their continued efforts to eliminate barriers and to create inclusion for all. The Coalition wrote the Minister of Service NL in November 2016 - eight months and still no answers. Despite the ongoing efforts of the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities, the current Liberal Government has not yet given them an update on recommendations which COD-NL along with the Buildings Accessibility Advisory Board have been asking for,” said Perry.

“The Building Accessibility Advisory Board have submitted eighteen recommendations to the government. These changes to the Building Accessibility Act and its regulations have also been endorsed by the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities – Newfoundland and Labrador. Despite this, the Liberal government has not given COD-NL an update on the recommendations,” added Perry.

MHA Perry has written Service NL Minister Perry Trimper and the Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities, Sherry Gambin-Walsh, in efforts to have this issue addressed.

“The Coalition of Persons with Disabilities has advised us that government has not responded to their letters and that the Building Accessibility Advisory Board has not met in over twenty months. It is time for these Ministers to step up and make accessible buildings a priority; accessibility buildings will help to increase access to many programs and services,” said Perry.
