St. John’s, NL (December 19, 2018) – Barry Petten, Official Opposition Critic for Transportation, says, “Rates for customers using the Marine Atlantic ferry service are too high and may be going higher.”

“I have traveled the past two years on Marine Atlantic, and I hear many people saying the prices are atrocious, from the costs for vehicles and cabins to food and so forth.  This isn’t a cheap service by any stretch, but it’s one of the main routes for our food supply and most other products we purchase, and for travelers,” said Petten.

“Three years ago, the Liberals promised to do something to stop rising rates, but they haven’t kept their word.  Ottawa continues to force Marine Atlantic to recover 65 per cent of their costs from users, and costs are up.  Earlier this year, they added a fuel surcharge to the cost of tickets.  Current rates may be locked in until March, but after that, cost increases will continue to get passed on unless the Liberals step in like they promised,” he said.

“Along with all the other Liberal tax increases since 2016, these rising rates are crushing people and our economy, raising the costs of living here, traveling here and exporting goods from here.  The ferry is our highway, and raising the cost of using it is highway robbery,” he said.  “This province needs lower barriers to growth, not higher ones.”

Petten is calling on the province’s seven MPs and the Ball Liberal provincial government to be more vocal in pressuring the Government of Canada to bring rates down.  “The Gulf ferry service is part of our Trans-Canada Highway link, guaranteed in our Terms of Union, and pricing the service unreasonably high is highway robbery that sucks money out of people’s pockets and out of our economy.”
