St. John’s, NL (January 16, 2019) – Barry Petten, Transportation Critic for the Official Opposition, said the Official Opposition agrees with Stephenville Mayor Tom Rose that solutions are needed to steep airfares between airports in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“It’s shocking that it costs $800 to get between points on the Island and $1500 to get between Labrador and the Island when other jurisdictions offer short-haul flights for a fraction of those amounts,” said Petten.  “It’s time to demand, not only explanations, but solutions to bring airfares down.”

“Steep fares affect the competiveness of businesses in our province, undermine tourism and create a financial burden for people accessing health care.  Factors that drive up the cost of living in our province stand in the way of growth and prosperity,” he said.

“Airlines want to be profitable, but lower fares would surely boost passenger volumes.  Are there things we could be doing to encourage airlines to lower their fares within the province?”

Petten said the consumer advocate should be empowered to look into the issue, consult with stakeholders and recommend solutions.
