St. John’s, NL (January 21, 2019) – Tracey Perry, PC MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune, welcomes news that the Government of Scotland has agreed to a Government of Canada request to repatriate the remains of two Beothuk people, Demasduit and Nonosabasut.

Perry said the repatriation efforts were driven by Chief Mi'sel Joe of the Miawpukek First Nation in Conne River.

Perry brought a resolution to the House of Assembly on April 13, 2016, “that this hon. House call upon the Government of the United Kingdom to facilitate the repatriation of the remains of Demasduit and Nonosabasut to Canada so that they may be laid to rest with dignity.”

The resolution was passed without dissent.

Perry said at the time: “Let's do the right thing, and let's bring Demasduit and Nonosabasut home.”

Perry said she hopes the Government of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador will work together with Indigenous communities to find a suitable resting place for Demasduit and Nonosabasut.
