St. John’s, NL (January 31, 2019) – David Brazil, Health Critic for the Official Opposition, is pleased that “public pressure has cause the Liberals to reverse their firmly entrenched opposition to cataract surgery clinics on the eve of the election.”

“But the Liberals still have to answer for the campaign they have waged against cataract surgeons over the past year, and the implications for the many people waiting for eye surgery.”

“A year ago, even after the public stood with Dr. Justin French demanding clinical access to timely cataract surgery, Health Minister John Haggie doubled down on his attacks on eye doctors, asking people to call a hotline to report physicians for breaking the law,” said Brazil.

“People were trying to get their badly needed eye surgery on a timely basis, but the Liberals blocked their way and punished the doctors who were offering to help. The Liberals have to answer for that. They compromised the best interests of people on the West Coast and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador by blocking their path to timely surgery,” he said.

“The point of the eye care clinic was to cut patient wait times and continue to make the health care budget affordable – something the Liberals did not care about until they saw the pre-election polls. It’s still not about people, but all about politics for the Liberals.”

Brazil said, “This is just another example of the Ball Liberals not being effective in making decisions.”

A Ches Crosbie PC Government will make health care decisions in the best interests of people based on the evidence and not politics. This is in keeping with the PC Party policy of lower taxes, affordable energy and honest government.
