Crosbie Says Swift Action Needed After Black Duck Cove Plant Loss

St. John’s, NL (May 16, 2019) – PC Leader Ches Crosbie said the people of the province were saddened by the loss of the Black Duck Cove shrimp plant in a fire overnight. The plant has been a major employer in the region, and its loss is a grave concern to many families.

I was in the region just days ago, seeing and hearing firsthand how reliant our people are on local employers, particularly in core industries like the fishery. The region cannot absorb the impact on its own. Swift action is needed. It's important for the province to step in immediately with a support plan for those affected, doing whatever we can, just as we have for other towns devastated by such losses.

We will help the people of Black Duck Cove get through this. All of us are thankful that no one was injured in the fire. We are especially grateful to the brave firefighters of the Straits Fire Department who - despite the risk - rushed in to do whatever they could to contain the fire and protect nearby homes.
