Crosbie writes Federal Justice Minister to support amending Criminal Code to ban Conversion Therapy

St. John’s, NL (July 11, 2019) – Yesterday, PC Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie wrote the federal Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada calling for an amendment to the Criminal Code of Canada to ban conversion therapy.

The Canadian Psychological Association opposes conversion therapy as “based on the assumption that LGBTQ identities indicate a mental disorder” and “can result in negative outcomes, such as distress, anxiety, depression, negative self-image, a feeling of personal failure, difficulty sustaining relationships, and sexual dysfunction.”

Crosbie said “The Official Opposition took the position a year ago that so called ‘conversion therapy’ should be banned in Newfoundland and Labrador. While we are unaware of conversion therapy currently happening in Newfoundland and Labrador, we have heard of individuals being sent to other provinces for this purpose.”

Justice and Public Safety critic Helen Conway Ottenheimer said “In recent months, this issue has gained attention nationally and we support an amendment to the Criminal Code of Canada to end this practice once and for all.”
