Transparency Needed on Electricity Cost Projections: Crosbie

St. John’s, NL (August 3, 2018) – Today, Progressive Conservative Leader Ches Crosbie is calling on Premier Ball to release the Liberal Government’s comparative analysis on the electricity rate projections for Atlantic Canada.

“Premier Dwight Ball and Natural Resources Minister Siobhan Coady are talking about making our energy rates on par with the Maritimes -- but if they are wrong about what that rate is, hundreds of millions are at stake,” said Crosbie

“The publicly available numbers I’ve studied suggest that electricity rates in the Maritimes are below 16 cents per kilowatt hour. This is lower than what this government suggests our neighbours are paying!”

Currently, the Ball Liberals are suggesting that Maritime electricity costs are between 16 and 18 cents per kilowatt hour. Crosbie believes the government must make their projections public in order for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to have confidence in the Government’s ability to mitigate rates.

“How can we expect Dwight Ball to ensure lowest possible electricity rates, if we can’t even validate the numbers he is talking about?” questioned Crosbie Crosbie stands by his previous call to refer all matters of rate mitigation to the Public Utilities Board. Crosbie believes that a referral will allow energy rates to stay as low as possible, and provide needed guidance to the Ball Liberals that they clearly do not have.

“This is another reason why the Ball Liberals need to stop planning behind closed doors, and bring rate mitigation discussions to the public through a referral to the Public Utilities Board,” added Crosbie

“After three years, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are tired of the incompetence of the Ball Liberals, and want decisive action to ensure energy rates can be as low as possible.”
