NL the Only Province to Let Seniors Go Blind Because They Cannot Afford Treatment

St. John’s, NL (July 24, 2019) – PC Opposition Health Critic Dave Brazil said it is appalling that Newfoundland and Labrador is the only province to let poor seniors go blind by capping the number of treatments they can receive for a certain eye disease to 15 during their lifetime.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe, irreversible vision loss in people over age 60.  It occurs when the small central portion of the retina, known as the macula, deteriorates. (Source: webmd.com)

Brazil said, “Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial Drug Plan provides coverage for a lifetime maximum of 15 injections to treat age-related macular degeneration. This cap creates significant financial hardship for seniors who need to continue therapy or else face the devastating consequences of vision loss.”

The Canadian Ophthalmological Society says Newfoundland and Labrador’s cap falls short of what is needed to maintain vision for people who require treatment, especially if both eyes are affected.

Brazil said, “No other provinces place a cap on treatment.”

“Why isn’t our government providing proper care for seniors who are facing vision loss because they cannot afford treatment?”

“When is our province going to eliminate the cap on treatment for those facing age-related macular degeneration?”
