St. John’s, NL (August 5, 2019) – PC MHA for Harbour Main Helen Conway Ottenheimer wants to know when the federal government will begin to clean up the three sunken whaling vessels in Conception Harbour, which are leaking oil and contaminating local waters, fish and infrastructure.

When announcing federal funding to clean up the Manolis L wreck near Fogo, federal minister Dominic LeBlanc issued a news release in 2018 stating: "The protection of our waters and marine ecosystems is a fundamental commitment of the Government of Canada. Protection of the marine environment and the safety of those at sea are top priorities for the Canadian Coast Guard. Dealing with this pollution threat supports the Government of Canada’s commitment to effectively dealing with wrecked, abandoned and hazardous vessels."

Conway Ottenheimer said, "We're holding the federal government to its promise."

"The Government of Canada is well aware of the oil contamination at Conception Harbour because the Canadian Coast Guard deployed a containment boom, which failed; the Coast Guard has been assessing the condition of the vessels; and the ‎federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans has posted a notice telling people not to consume shellfish from the waters."

She said, "Acknowledging the problem is an important first step, but it took years‎ to get Ottawa to take the next step when it came to cleaning up the Manolis L, and people are concerned about the impact on their health, the local marine ecosystem and the economy if Ottawa waits just as long instead of taking seriously its duty to protect Conception Harbour."

The MHA is echoing the call of the Mayor of Conception Harbour, Craig Williams, for urgent action to deal with the contamination, which has become much worse in recent weeks.
