St. John’s, NL (August 9, 2018) – Today, the PC Official Opposition caucus is calling on the Ball Liberals to stand down in supporting the federal carbon tax imposed by Justin Trudeau after recent media reports.

“Last week, the Trudeau Liberals admitted what we already knew -- that the federal carbon tax will take away jobs from hard-working families, including those here in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said MHA Barry Petten, Opposition Environment Critic.

“Despite this, the Ball Liberals are recklessly standing by and supporting yet another new tax. We need sound economic policy that supports industry in creating jobs – not nationally imposed policies that will make life more expensive.”

Petten refers to recent media reports that the Trudeau Liberals will be offering some breaks for large-scale industry due to the negative impact it will have on job-growth. This is contrary to initial comments that this new tax would somehow be good for the economy.

“Dwight Ball is blindly supporting a tax without being honest and transparent with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador on what impacts, if any, it will have on addressing the real issues of climate change,” added Petten

“Instead, Dwight Ball and his federal counterparts are imposing a tax-grab that will take more money away from hard-working Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, drive up the cost of goods, and kill jobs in our economy. The Liberals have an obligation to do better for the people of our province.”
