Is Trudeau Bringing the $200M Cheque?
With the Prime Minister in the province for the Regatta and a fundraiser, people need to ask him whether he’s also brought the $200 million cheque for rate mitigation that the Premier said he’d deliver.

St. John’s, NL (August 6, 2019) – PC Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie is reminding people that Premier Ball announced $200 million in federal funding for rate mitigation that Ottawa never promised to provide, and Finance Minister Tom Osborne said he would press all federal parties to commit to deliver the money. The Premier’s meeting with federal Finance minister Bill Morneau in the spring following the April Fool’s Agreement ended without any such commitment.

“Now is the chance to put the question directly to Justin Trudeau,” said Crosbie.

“With the Prime Minister in the province for the Regatta and a fundraiser, people need to ask him whether he’s also brought the $200 million cheque for rate mitigation that the Premier said he’d deliver.”

“Word is the Prime Minister is speaking at Memorial but not taking any questions. If that’s true, then people need to ask him directly when he meets them to shake their hands.”

Crosbie said the visit presents the Premier with a rare opportunity to raise issues of provincial concern with the Prime Minister on home turf. “Is the Premier meeting with the Prime Minister about this and other pressing provincial issues while he’s here? There’s certainly plenty for them to talk about.  It would be a shame to let the opportunity slide without raising these issues directly with the man himself.”
