For Immediate Release

Stephenville, NL (August 21, 2019) – New statistics from the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada ‎show the Ball government's fiscal and economic approach is pushing more and more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians over the edge into financial ruin.

The latest statistics show the number of personal bankruptcies in the second quarter of the year rose by 19.2 per cent over the first quarter. And compared with the second quarter of 2018, the second quarter bankruptcies in 2019 rose by 22.4 per cent. LINK: https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/bsf-osb.nsf/eng/h_br04114.html

PC Opposition critic Tony Wakeham said the latest numbers - among the worst in the country - "are breaking records in Newfoundland and Labrador, but more importantly, they are breaking hearts and destroying dreams in our own communities."

"We have been saying for a long time that the Ball Liberal policies are doing three things wrong: they are completely missing opportunities to grow our economy and the jobs people need; they are crushing people with taxes to pay for their own failure to manage the province's books properly; and they are letting Ottawa completely off the hook for not treating us fairly, like other provinces, when it comes to fiscal transfers."

"Instead of attracting people here with a climate conducive to job growth, the Ball Liberals have kept taxes far too high, even in the face of the independent tax report that their own government commissioned - a report that described their levy as 'regressive'. They paid a million dollars for a McKinsey report that told them they were undermining the very economic growth levers that offered the most promise for jobs and prosperity in Newfoundland and Labrador. And still, they refuse to listen. Their misguided 'way forward' is doing nothing but spiraling the province downward and ruining the lives of families that can no longer make ends meet."
