St. John’s, NL (August 28, 2019) – With the start of the 2019-20 school year just weeks away, the Official Opposition is asking if school children in the province will still be walking to school in unsafe conditions under an inadequate provincial school busing policy.

In the 2019 general election campaign, the PC Party promised to identify $3.5 million to implement a new school busing policy that would ensure no child would have to walk to school in unsafe conditions.

The Liberals, on the other hand, repeatedly argued that everything was fine and no changes were needed – despite the protestations of parents.

Opposition transportation critic Barry Petten said, “We have brought the people’s concerns to the Ball government for years, but they just haven’t listened. The Liberals either did not believe parents or did not care enough to invest in safe school busing for children walking to school in dangerous conditions.”

Opposition education critic Craig Pardy said, “It’s the start of another school year. We will be looking to the Ball minority Liberal government to take a different approach this year by announcing an immediate policy change that will ensure no child will have to walk to school in unsafe conditions.”

Petten said, “The status quo has forced some children to walk to school along dangerous roads that become even more treacherous in winter – and that’s clearly not acceptable. The dismal state of many roads is all the more reason to accommodate children on buses. The status quo is not good enough.”

Pardy said, “We are calling on the education minister to announce a new school busing policy before the new school year begins that ensures no child will have to walk to school in unsafe conditions.”
