St. John’s, NL (September 18, 2019) – Tony Wakeham, PC MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, today expressed shock and disappointment on the news that PAL Airlines will be pulling out of Stephenville Airport.

“Stephenville Airport is a significant employer and access point for other destinations,” noted Wakeham. “PAL is currently the anchor tenant at Stephenville Airport, although its scheduled service has continued to erode over the years.  The loss of PAL will be another blow to an airport that is struggling to survive.”

Wakeham noted the provincial government has been totally absent with respect to any Air Access Strategy.

‎“Government has to wake up and realize the economic and tourism impact of both interprovincial and intraprovincial air travel. Yet, the Minister has seemingly washed his hands of the matter.”

‎“I am also deeply concerned about the very viability of the airport, that provides vital air ambulance access to other health care centres in the province. This is a critical link for the entire southwest coast, with the next nearest airport hours away. It is time for the Departments of Health and Community Services and Transportation and Works to come to the table.”
