For Immediate Release

St. John’s, NL (September 25, 2019) – PC Opposition leader Ches Crosbie today announced the formation of a committee to put together a Newfoundland and Labrador climate change action plan. The committee is expected to report to Crosbie in spring 2020.

"The plan will be a robust and credible plan for how Newfoundland and Labrador can participate in the national challenge of meeting Canada's climate change goals," Crosbie said.

The committee will be chaired by Dr. Sean McGrath, a Professor of Philosophy at Memorial University who also founded and co-chairs “For A New Earth” (FANE), a Newfoundland and Labrador not-for-profit organization established in 2015 to help raise awareness of ecological issues in the province. McGrath has lectured extensively and issued academic publications in the area of ecology, among his other areas of expertise.

The committee’s caucus liaison will be Lela Evans, MHA for Torngat Mountains, a district whose residents – principally Indigenous Labradorians – bring a unique perspective and particular concerns to the dialogue about climate change. Evans has over 20 years’ experience in the environmental field including environmental assessments, mining and construction.

Other committee members will be determined in the coming weeks.

Crosbie said, "I want to thank the distinguished chair of this committee for generously volunteering his time and agreeing to help bring together a group of people with diverse backgrounds and expertise to open up an honest discussion about climate change and point to real solutions."
