St. John’s, NL (October 10, 2019) – PC Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie said today that provincial Liberal Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne covered up the August die-off of millions of farmed salmon in Fortune Bay for a month.

“Byrne’s excuse that he had no ability to inform the public about the disaster is gross deception,” said Crosbie.

“Minister Byrne had a duty under the Aquaculture Act to have his officers inspect the disaster and issue cleanup directives,” said Crosbie.  “The main obstacle to public confidence in salmon aquaculture is Gerry Byrne.”

The Northern Harvest aquaculture company reported the deaths of farmed salmon to the provincial government on September 2nd.

“Gerry Byrne chose not to inform the public or inspect the disaster for a month” said Crosbie. “Minister Byrne’s cover-up is destroying public confidence in an industry that needs to succeed for the sake of jobs and prosperity on the south coast.”
