St. John’s, NL (October 11, 2019) – PC opposition leader Ches Crosbie noted today that on Aquaculture, the Ball Liberals have reaped what they sowed.

“The Ball Liberals gutted the former Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, including eliminating the dedicated Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) of Aquaculture, replacing the position with a patronage appointment.  The Department was also combined with Crown Lands and Agriculture further diluting administration and oversight.  You cannot strip out institutional knowledge with cronyism and expect anything less than the mess we now have on the South Coast.”

Crosbie was responding to continued public outrage over the attempted cover-up of the massive salmon die off on the South Coast.

“Minister Byrne indicated that on October 2nd, his department arranged for the Marine Institute to conduct a review of the event.  It is now October 11th and we have yet to see a terms of reference for this review or who will be involved.  In order to begin to restore public confidence, we need to see both immediately.  The future of this important industry and the sustainability of rural jobs is too important,” added Crosbie.
