St. John’s, NL (August 15, 2018) – Today MHA Barry Petten, Opposition Environment Critic, is raising concern about Premier Ball’s secret plan to put another costly tax on the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“On Friday, Premier Ball finally revealed he was looking to bring in a costly carbon tax -- similar to what is being done in the province of Alberta,” said Petten

“This cash-grab will do nothing but make life more expensive for our families, take money out of our economy, and kill jobs for hard-working Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”

Petten refers to comments made by Premier Ball on Friday, which suggests he is looking at putting an Alberta-style carbon tax in Newfoundland and Labrador. Currently, Alberta places a $30 per tonne cost on carbon.

Economists estimate that a $30 per tonne carbon tax would cost the average Newfoundland and Labrador household $516. Further, a memo from the federal Department of Finance has indicated that this rate should increase in future years above $50 per tonne by 2022.

“A $30 per tonne cost on carbon would cost hard-working families over $500 per year. This would be on top of the struggles Newfoundlanders and Labradorians currently face under the existing high-tax Liberal economic agenda,” added Petten

“Further, evidence shows that the Alberta carbon tax has imposed thousands of dollars of costs on small and medium-sized businesses, and not-for-profit organizations. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians cannot afford another tax that will raise the price of goods, and hurt local businesses and not-for-profits.”

Petten will continue to oppose the secrecy of the Ball Liberal’s carbon tax plans.

“Our PC Official Opposition caucus remains opposed to the Premier’s secret plans to bring forward a carbon tax,” said Petten

“He has provided no transparency to the public on the how much this cash-grab will cost our families, or how it will address the real issues of climate change. This is not good enough.”
