Office of the Official Opposition
For Immediate Release

St. John’s, NL (November 27, 2019) – Today, the Official Opposition is urging government to take immediate action to implement the recommendations made by the NLMA to address the shortage of family doctors in our province.

The NLMA released a report today that said we will need a total of 243 additional family physicians over a 10 year period, including the immediate need for additional 60 full-time family physicians. In the absence of a provincial human resource plan developed by government, the NLMA engaged a consultant to provide a forecast of the number of family physicians that are needed.

Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie said that “The family doctor shortage is one of the biggest issues facing the people of Newfoundland and Labrador today. We hear constantly from our constituents in all areas of the province that the shortage has reached near crisis levels. This crisis has been confirmed by the numbers released by the NLMA today and immediate action is needed.”

“The NLMA should be commended for taking the leadership to develop a Family Physician Human Resource Forecast to better understand the magnitude of the problem and to come up with solutions. Now, the government needs to take action and move on the recommendations made by the NLMA” said Crosbie.

Earlier this year the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) stated that 99,000 Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are without a family doctor – nearly double the number five years ago.

Opposition Health Critic David Brazil said that “The family doctor shortage places an undue hardship on the emergency rooms in our province. The NLMA’s forecast and plan, led by Dr. Peachey, will prove to be incredibly valuable to make substantial improvements in access to a family doctor. I urge the Minister to implement these recommendations without delay.”
