St. John’s, NL (December 12, 2019) – PC Finance critic Tony Wakeham says he was shocked to hear the Minister of Finance confirm on December 11 that the government is closing schools to save money.

Wakeham said, “When the Finance Minister was asked to give examples of initiatives the government was considering to cut spending, he went immediately to school closures and criticized the Opposition for standing up for students and communities whose schools are on the line.”

PC Education critic Craig Pardy said, “Despite denials by the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, we now know the Ball government is looking at closing schools, not to improve the education of our students, but to improve the government’s fiscal bottom line.”

Pardy said, “This is very disturbing. The most important consideration must always be the best interests of children. But it is now clear the decisions about schools are being driven by financial considerations, not educational considerations. It’s money first, children second, and that’s the wrong way to be thinking about our children’s education.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District decided to postpone all further school system reviews pending the government’s review of the Schools Act, but for some reason in June, the board changed its mind. Cuts are now back on the table.

“It certainly looks like the Finance Department is driving school closures as a way of saving money because its feeble efforts to drive growth in the economy are just not working,” said Wakeham.
