“The Auditor General has exposed the colossal failure of leadership by this Liberal government, which has no credible plan to provide a light at the end of the tunnel,” said Crosbie.

St. John’s, NL (December 19, 2019) – PC Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie said the latest reports from the province’s Auditor General expose a crisis of confidence in the Liberals.

“From public finances to the economy to taxation to the management of government departments, every indicator is going in the wrong direction. Now in their fifth year in office, the Liberal government that promised growth has instead made things worse through gross mismanagement,” said Crosbie.

“The crisis of confidence – coupled with the highest taxes in the country – are keeping consumers from spending, businesses from hiring and people from staying in the province. The more people we lose, the less transfers we receive from Ottawa, making a horrendous situation worse,” he said.

“The Auditor General has exposed the colossal failure of leadership by this Liberal government, which has no credible plan to provide a light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

“What our province desperately needs is new leadership and a real plan to inspire confidence and hope,” he said, noting:

· We should have been fighting harder from the beginning for our fair share from Ottawa.

· That will enable us to reduce the burden of taxation as other provinces have been doing to drive growth.

· When people have money and confidence to spend and hire, then our population and per-capita numbers will start heading in the right direction.

· When we have a buoyant economy that offers plenty of job alternatives, then we can focus properly on government’s spending problem without sending people and our economy into a tailspin or jeopardizing services.

“Progressive Conservatives are not ready to give up on Newfoundland and Labrador because we see the opportunities for our province to diversify and grow on par with other provinces. Growth will change everything, but first, we need to inspire confidence, trust, optimism and hope.”
