St. John’s, NL (February 14, 2020) – PC MHA for Conception Bay South Barry Petten said there are solutions to the worsening family doctor shortage which is causing hardship in the Conception Bay South region, if the provincial government is listening.

Petten is raising the issue again in light of news that the Kelligrews Medical Clinic is closing and some of the clinic’s family doctors will be relocating while others will be leaving the area.

“This loss will cause hardship for seniors, low income earners and people with disabilities by denying them access to services. My district has many seniors. As people age, their need for regular medical care increases, but their ability to get around decreases. Losing your local clinic and your family doctor can be devastating,” said Petten.

“The government needs to listen to us and act. When as many as a fifth of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians don’t have a family doctor, that’s what I call a crisis.”

Petten said there are things the provincial government can do to address the crisis. “They need to listen to the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association and, most importantly, to act on what they hear. Our Blue Book recognized the problem and outlined options to address the crisis.”

“If people don’t have regular access to doctors, things get missed, care is delayed, people get sicker, and the consequences and costs end up being greater. That’s poor health care management. This government needs to do better.”
