St. John’s, NL (March 11, 2020) – Terra Nova PC MHA Lloyd Parrott today paid tribute to the late Samuel Saunders of Glovertown, a tireless lifelong volunteer, who passed away on Monday, March 9.

“Sam was a friend of mine and I am a better person for having known him,” said Parrott.

In the House of Assembly, Parrott said: “Over the years, Samuel Saunders has been very heavily involved with the volunteer sector of Glovertown and area. Since his family moved to the area in the 1950’s, Samuel has been involved in a many of the local organizations. This includes officer positions with: St Edward’s Anglican Church, The Alexander Bay Lions Club , Glovertown Fire Department, Glovertown Recreation Committee, Alexander Bay 50+ Club, Glovertown and Area Crime Stoppers, the local Senior’s Complex (ABUCHI),The Canadian Institute for the Blind, and the Glovertown Academy School Breakfast Program. Sam has also server for three terms on the Glovertown Town Council and sat on the Central Regional Health Board.”

Parrott said, “Sam’s passion and interest in provincial politics was undeniable.” He served as a candidate in the 1975 general election, a local district association president, a campaign organizer, a manager and a longtime party member.

“In true ‘Sam fashion’, he put his everything into each and every role and took great pride in carrying out his duties. In almost all of these organizations and committees, Sam rose to top executive positions and received recognition for his outstanding work for many of them over the years.”

Parrott noted that Samuel’s greatest involvement was with the Lions Club, where he served for more than 40 years. With that organization, he rose to the position of District Governor and received a Humanitarian Award from Lions International.

“Every community boasts of their volunteers but few can be proud of someone the caliber of Sam Saunders. There are few organizations locally that have not been directly touched by his leadership skills, dedication and hard work. When Sam takes on a role in an organization it becomes a commitment of time, skill and energy,” said Parrott.

It was in recognition of this commitment to volunteerism that Sam was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 as well as Lifetime Appreciation Award for outstanding contributions to his community, presented in 2011 by Road to the Beaches Seniors Clubs.

Parrott said, “Samuel Saunders has made a lasting impression on our community and province and he will certainly be missed by all who knew him and those that were positively impacted by his service.”
