St. John’s, NL (March 12, 2020) – The Official Opposition is welcoming the repatriation of the remains of Nonosabasut and Demasduit from Scotland.

Opposition Indigenous Affairs critic Lela Evans said, “I want to commend the Indigenous communities of Newfoundland and Labrador for coming together in this way to honour the memory of the Beothuk people. Their loss is one of the world’s great tragedies that can never be undone. Even today, we have to pay closer attention to the needs of small and vulnerable Indigenous communities so the things we value most are not lost forever.”

On April 13, 2016, the PC Opposition brought forward a private member’s resolution calling upon the Government of the United Kingdom to facilitate the repatriation of the remains of Demasduit and Nonosabasut to Canada so that they may be laid to rest with dignity.

Three current caucus members spoke to that resolution.

Conception Bay South MHA Barry Petten said: “I commend Mi'sel Joe for taking the cause and speaking up because it's very important. Bringing the remains back – I will say it again – is the right thing to do because they should be brought back where they belong.”

Conception Bay East – Bell Island MHA Dave Brazil said: “We need to reflect on those things so that future generations understand it and have a better appreciation for what's gone on.”

Cape St. Francis MHA Kevin Parsons said: “I hope that education – that the children in our schools will learn about the Beothuks and will learn something from the Beothuks. Learn that our land is so important to us. It's so important that we keep our rivers, our streams and everything that we do – keep it clean. Keep it the way it was when they were here.”
